Jeremy Rifkin to Speak May 9

LEADING ACTIVIST TO SPEAK AT OHIO STATE
     COLUMBUS -- Jeremy Rifkin, the noted author, activist and
social critic, will speak on "The Biotech Revolution" on May 9 at
The Ohio State University.  His free public lecture in the Ohio
Union East Ballroom will begin at 8 p.m. and will be followed by
a question-and-answer period.  Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and
seating will be on a first come, first seated basis.  Parking
will be available in the Ohio Union Parking Ramp on North High
Street.  Rifkin will also be giving two seminars during the day.
     Rifkin is the author of 12 critically acclaimed books, which
have been translated into 13 languages.  His books cover topics
from politics and culture to philosophy and science.  He is often
called upon by government and industry and has testified before
Congress several times.  He is also a regular guest on national
news shows such as ABC Nightline, Good Morning America, The Today
Show, Face the Nation, Donahue, The MacNeil Lehrer News Hour, and
20/20.  Rifkin is a regular commentator on National Public
Radio's All Things Considered and is a frequent contributor of
guest editorials for The Washington Post, USA Today, The New York
Times, and other publications.  In addition, he is the founder
and president of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington,
D.C., and chairperson of the Green Movement for Environmental
Justice and a Sustainable Economy.
     He has lobbied the government on many issues, including
patenting and release of genetically engineered organisms,
biological warfare research, environmental and human effects of
nuclear explosion simulators, sale of fetal tissue for medical
research, bovine growth hormone, and ethics and policies of human
gene research.
     Rifkin is regarded as a leading critic of genetic
engineering technology.  He has won several historic court
challenges to protect the environment and public health.  He has
also been selected as one of the 150 people in the United States
who are most influential in shaping federal government policy,
and has spoken at hundreds of college campuses across the
country.

     He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the
University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the Fletcher
School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

     The lecture is part of the Leaders for the Twenty-First
Century Speaker Series, sponsored by the seven class honoraries
at Ohio State.  In the past the series has hosted such notable
speakers as conservation biologist Thomas Lovejoy, National
Endowment for the Humanities Chair Lynne V. Cheney, and U. S.
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.  The chair of this year's
speaker committee is Joseph Craine, a junior from Mayfield
majoring in biology.
