Joycelyn Elders to Speak Tuesday

FORMER U.S. SURGEON GENERAL JOYCELYN ELDERS TO VISIT OHIO STATE

     Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders will speak 
during the closing ceremony of the United Black World Month 
celebration of black heritage Tuesday (2/25) at 7:30 p.m. in the 
Ohio Union East Ballroom, 1739 N. High St.  Elders will be 
available to speak with members of the media at 4:30 p.m. in the 
Hall of Fame room at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 
153 W. 12th Ave. 

     Elders, currently a pediatric endocrinologist at the 
University of Arkansas School of Medicine, became the first 
African American woman surgeon general in September 1993.  She 
was the second woman to hold the post.  She resigned in December 
1994 amid controversy regarding issues of sex education for youth 
in schools.  An advocate of health care reform, women's health 
concerns and improved prenatal care, Elders identified the threat 
of violence, sexually transmitted diseases, poverty and substance 
abuse as the biggest threats to the health and well being of 
American youth.

     The event is free and open to the public.
