Jumpstart Columbus to celebrate first year of helping preschool children

Since Jumpstart Columbus began one year ago, 40 Ohio State University students have logged more than 14,000 hours helping to prepare preschool children living in the neighborhood east of High Street to start school ready to learn.

Jumpstart Columbus, which is sponsored by Ohio State’s College of Human Ecology, is kicking off its second year with an open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday (10/24) at Godman Guild, 303 E. Sixth Ave. The Child Development Council’s Head Start Program at Godman Guild serves as one of four sites for this Ohio State program.

Jumpstart Columbus is the local site of a national preschool enrichment and literacy program. Ohio State students who take part in the program work at four preschools in the neighborhood east of campus. They concentrate on helping the children improve reading and social skills, assist the teachers, and improve their leadership skills in early childhood education. Parents can use Jumpstart activities to help their preschool children acquire skills needed to start school ready to learn.
