Leadership announcement: McPheron to step down as provost

Ohio State alum & former CFAES dean will remain in post until June 30

President Kristina M. Johnson sent the following email to The Ohio State University community today (Dec. 1).

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I write to share with you that Dr. Bruce A. McPheron, who has provided exceptional service to his alma mater in a number of roles, has decided to step down from his position as executive vice president and provost, effective this coming summer.

He will remain provost through June 30, 2021. He will continue to serve as a professor of entomology in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

During Dr. McPheron’s tenure as provost, he led many initiatives focused on advancing teaching and learning across our campuses. They include the Teaching Support Program and the Digital Flagship collaboration with Apple to support educational innovation as well as economic development opportunities for students and members of our community. Additionally, the work of Dr. McPheron and his team to build the infrastructure necessary to support convergent research and scholarship across disciplines will benefit this university for years to come. The establishment of our Translational Data Analytics Institute and the exciting progress of the West Campus Innovation District -- which will include the Energy Advancement and Innovation Center -- will continue to build upon Dr. McPheron’s legacy as provost.

We are sharing this news today to begin preparing for a smooth transition of leadership in the Office of Academic Affairs. We will launch a national search for the executive vice president and provost in the coming weeks.

Please join me in expressing our gratitude and appreciation for Bruce’s many outstanding and ongoing contributions to Ohio State. He is an exemplary Buckeye, and we look forward to continuing to benefit from his service to our students, faculty, staff and community partners.

Sincerely,

Kristina M. Johnson, PhD

President
