Lebow to Head Mershon Center

LEBOW NAMED DIRECTOR OF MERSHON CENTER

     COLUMBUS -- Richard N. Lebow, 54, a noted international 
relations scholar, was appointed director of the Mershon Center 
at The Ohio State University, effective July 1.  The appointment 
runs through June 2000.  He replaces Charles Hermann who resigned  
last year to take a position at Texas A&M University.

     The Mershon Center is an interdisciplinary center focusing 
on research in the areas of international security, political 
psychology, democratization and related public policy.

     Most recently, Lebow was a professor of political science 
and director of the program in international relations at the 
Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the 
University of Pittsburgh.  He specializes in conflict prevention 
and management, psychological models of foreign policy, 
bargaining and negotiation, and regional conflict.

     From 1983 to 1992, Lebow served as director of the Peace 
Studies Program at Cornell University, and as a professor of 
government and management.

     Prior to that, Lebow was a professor of foreign affairs at 
Johns Hopkins University in 1981 to 1983.  From 1980-81, he was a 
scholar-in-residence with the Central Intelligence Agency.

     Lebow is the author or co-author of seven books including: 
We All Lost the Cold War; Psychology and Detergency; Between 
Peace and War: The Nature of International Crisis; White Britain 
and Black Ireland: Social Stereotypes and Colonial Policy; and 
When Does Deterrence Succeed and How Do We Know?  He earned his 
Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago and his 
Master of Arts degree from Yale University.  He earned his 
doctoral degree from the City University of New York.

     Lebow is on the editorial boards of the American Political 
Science Review, International Studies Quarterly, and the Journal 
of Behavioral Decision Making.  He serves as series editor of 
Perspectives on Security, Johns Hopkins University Press.
