M. Brewer to Head APS

OHIO STATE PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR TO HEAD NATIONAL ORGANIZATION

COLUMBUS -- Marilynn Brewer, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Social
Psychology at The Ohio State University, has been elected
president of the American Psychological Society.

Brewer (DUBLIN 43017), who becomes the fifth president of
the APS, began her two-year term in June.

The APS is a national organization of research and academic
psychologists. Brewer was one of the founding members in 1989.
She was elected president by the APS's membership, which
currently is about 16,400.

As president, Brewer said she plans to emphasize education
about the role of psychology and psychological research in our
society.

"I think our broad presence in undergraduate education is
our best opportunity for dissemination and public awareness of
psychology," Brewer said.

Brewer is a social psychologist who specializes in studies
of social identity in organizations and in society at large. She
came to Ohio State July 1, after 11 years as director of the
Institute for Social Science Research at the University of
California, Los Angeles.
