Math Prof Wins Guggenheim Award

MATH PROFESSOR RECEIVES GUGGENHEIM FELLOWSHIP

     COLUMBUS -- An Ohio State University professor has been
selected to receive a $29,000 fellowship from the John Simon
Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in New York.

     Henri Moscovici, professor of mathematics, will receive the
nine-month grant in September and will use it to further his
research in geometric analysis.  He plans to refine the Chern-
Weil theory of multi-dimensional geometric objects, which assigns
a specific set of numbers to such objects to classify them by
their shape.

     The present state of the art of the theory only allows for
the classification of smooth and uniform shapes.  Moscovici will
study the theory's possible application in classifying angular
shapes.

     "One of the main problems in topology is classifying
shapes," Moscovici said.  "Hopefully this research will further
the science in this area."

     Moscovici, 50, a resident of Upper Arlington, was one of 152
artists, scholars, and scientists to receive the fellowship.
More than $4 million in fellowship awards were given out this
year.

     The Guggenheim Foundation appoints fellows based on
achievements in research.  Faculty at 72 American colleges and
universities have received fellowships totaling more than $165
million from the foundation in its 71-year history.
