Military History Conference

GRADUATE STUDENTS ORGANIZE MILITARY HISTORY CONFERENCE

     COLUMBUS -- Topics ranging from the Civil War to the Cold
War will be discussed during the second military history
conference organized by graduate students at The Ohio state
University.

     The conference, Theatrum Militarum II, will be held April
15-16 in Dulles Hall, 230 W. 17th Ave. on the Ohio State Columbus
campus.  The program is free and open to the public.  Room
locations will be listed in the Dulles Hall lobby.  Parking will
be available three blocks north of Dulles at Northwest Ramp,
Woody Hayes Drive and Neil Avenue.

     John Shy, professor at the University of Michigan and an
expert on the American Revolution, will deliver the keynote
address on Doing Military History: War and Society, a look at
conceptual issues involved in studying war's effect on society.
His address will be at 7:45 p.m. on April 15.

     More than three dozen graduate students from America and
abroad, including 17 from Ohio State, will present papers at the
conference.

     Ohio history topics include Ohio's 37th Infantry Division
During the Korean War by Bill Donnelly of Ohio State at 1:30 p.m.
on April 15 and Forming the Fifth:  Mustering Ohio's 5th United
States Colored Troops, 1863 by Verb Washington of Ohio State at
3:30 p.m. on April 16.

     The conference is sponsored by the Program in International
Security and Military Affairs of The Mershon Center, Society for
Military History, Midwest Military History Consortium, and the
Department of History at Ohio State.
