More than 200 Young Scholars to attend Summer Academy

COLUMBUS – More than 200 high school students from the nine largest urban school districts in Ohio will take part in the Samuel DuBois Cook Summer Academy from July 11 through 24 on the Ohio State University Columbus campus. Students will reside in campus residence halls and attend academic classes during their stay.

Young Scholars entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades from Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Lorain, Toledo, and Youngstown will participate in the annual academic camp. Students will participate in math, science and language-arts classes. Additionally, students will select from 27 electives for daily workshops, ranging from acting to writing.

The students in the Young Scholars Program attend the Summer Academy as part of their yearlong programming requirement. Students that successfully complete the program in 12th grade are guaranteed admission to Ohio State as well as a financial aid package based on their verified need.

A primary mission of Ohio State’s Office of Minority Affairs is to offer services and programs that facilitate the achievement of urban youth at Ohio State. In this effort the university established the Young Scholars Program (YSP) in 1988 as a statewide model to increase the number of low-income students, including African-American, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian and Appalachian students, in their pursuit of a college degree. Through partnerships with Ohio State and the nine largest urban school districts and communities in Ohio, the program nurtures the enormous potential of its students through academic, personal and career development initiatives.
