Nearly 300 undergrads to display research in forum

Research projects that range from the effects of blackberries on reducing cancer risk to how rhetorical discourse has made the U.S.-led war in Iraq a “fitting” response to Sept. 11 will be featured Wednesday (5/12) at the Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum.

Some of the university’s best and brightest undergraduate researchers will display
their projects from noon to 4 p.m. at St. John Arena, 410 Woody Hayes Drive. Judging of the projects will begin at noon, and the awards ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. President Karen Holbrook will attend at approximately 3:45 p.m.

Now in its ninth year, the forum has drawn increasing numbers of students. This year, nearly 300 students will showcase their work in all undergraduate research areas, including categories in agriculture/environmental sciences, arts/architecture, biological sciences, health professions, engineering and humanities. More than 240 competed in 2003, and 130 in 2002.

Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 will be awarded in each of the final research categories and the research projects will be published in Ohio State’s “Journal of Undergraduate Research Scholarship.” The forum is funded through a major gift from long-time university supporters Richard and Martha Denman.
