NEW Leadership Institute to educate, empower collegiate women

Women in Ohio make up only 22 percent of the state’s legislature and only two Ohio women hold statewide elected offices. To garner more interest in political careers, the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy will sponsor a weeklong residential institute to teach collegiate women about politics and policymaking.

More than 25 women from universities throughout Ohio will learn from women educators and politicians at The National Education for Women’s Leadership (NEW Leadership) Ohio Summer Institute, from Monday (6/24) to Friday (6/28) at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road.

Among the institute’s featured speakers and panelists are Bernadine Healy, the keynote speaker and former president and CEO of the American Red Cross; Betty Montgomery, Ohio attorney general; Priscilla Mead, Ohio senator; Jo Ann Davidson, former speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives; and Yvette McGee Brown, president of The Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Children’s Hospital.

The institute will educate women on leadership skills through hands-on workshops, group and panel discussions, and site visits to public policy agencies and to the Ohio statehouse. Institute topics will range from leadership to communication skills and from diversity to running for office.

Participants come from Ohio colleges and universities, including Bowling Green State University, Denison University and The Ohio State University. The students are majoring in a variety of disciplines, including business, English, political science and international studies.
