Newark campus to exhibit Lichtenstein#s pre-Pop art

NEWARK CAMPUS GALLERY TO EXHIBIT LICHTENSTEIN'S PRE-POP ART

     NEWARK, Ohio -- The Art Gallery at The Ohio State
University's Newark campus and Central Ohio Technical College
will welcome the onset of summer with a prominent exhibition of
works by artist Roy Lichtenstein from private and public
collections in Ohio.

     The exhibit will feature works done between 1948 and 1960
before he became internationally known for his Pop style.

     Lichtenstein, born in New York City, attended Ohio State in
the 1940s and taught painting and drawing at the university until
1951.

     Close to 30 oils, drawings and prints, many of which have
never been shown to the public before, will be on display.  His
early work is quite different from his more familiar Pop style,
which includes pieces such as "Brushstrokes in Flight."

     These early works combine cubism with a simplicity of line
and form.  There are even those who find Lichtenstein's naivete
refreshingly exuberant.  It is evident in viewing these pieces
how he arrived at his later Pop period.

     This is the first time Lichtenstein's early works from
collections of Ohioans have been assembled for exhibition.  This
is not a travelling show but has been solely organized by The Art
Gallery and promises to be the most important exhibition the
Newark Campus has ever had, according to Markus Kruse, curator.

     The dates for this Lichtenstein exhibition are May 7 through
June 8, with the opening reception on May 7 from 6-9 p.m.  The
public is invited.  Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10
a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and closed Sundays.
The Art Gallery is located in Le Fevre Hall.
