News Advisory on Clean Up

                         NEWS ADVISORY:
VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN UP CAMPUS NEIGHBORHOOD ON SATURDAY

Students, faculty and staff members of The Ohio State
University will participate in "High on Pride," the University
Community Clean Up on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
They will join with area residents to pick up litter, sweep up
broken glass, remove dead brush, and haul away bulk trash in the
neighborhood just east of the university campus. Up to 1,000
volunteers are expected to be cleaning streets, alleys and other
public spaces in the area bounded by High Street, Fourth Street,
Norwich Avenue and Ninth Avenue. The area covers about 2/3 of a
square mile and includes some 26 miles of sidewalks and 12 miles
of alleys.

Columbus Mayor Greg Lashutka will greet volunteers at 9 a.m.
at the registration area at the Wexner Center plaza at 15th
Avenue and High Street. Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee will
join the Clean Up effort about 12:30 p.m. They will be pleased
to discuss the Clean Up and its role in the university-community
partnership to improve the campus area.

     From 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a post-Clean Up celebration
at the Wexner Center Plaza, with live music, free food and soft
drinks for the volunteers. All volunteers are also eligible for
prizes awarded by drawing, including airline tickets, a computer,
a get-away weekend package, Ohio State football tickets, and
numerous others. Food, raffle prizes and many of the supplies
have been donated by area businesses and by various university
departments.

For further information, call Ruth Gerstner in the Office of
University Communications, 292-8424. For assistance in covering
the Clean Up, stop by the registration tables at the Wexner plaza
between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
