News Conference on Violence Study

 SOCIAL WORKERS TO HOLD NEWS CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP ON VIOLENCE

     Social workers will focus on violence in the United States
and abroad during a news conference and a workshop, titled "Stop
the Violence...With Justice for All," in Columbus on April 29.

     Marjorie Brittain Hammock, chief of social services for the
South Carolina Department of Corrections, will speak at the news
conference April 29 at 9:30 a.m. in the College of Social Work's
basement conference room, 9 Stillman Hall, 1947 College Road, on
The Ohio State University's Columbus campus.  She will announce
that a $92,000 federal grant has been received to study the
relationship between violence and international development in
the context of substance abuse.

     Also attending will be James Billups, associate professor of
social work at Ohio State, who is the project's principal
researcher; and Jo Anne St. Clair, executive director of the Ohio
Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

     The U.S. Agency for International Development has awarded
the grant to the National Association of Social Workers.  NASW
chose four state chapters in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan
to serve as centers to identify, review and analyze research and
resources on the link between drugs and violence.  Included will
be a three-year, in-depth study of drug trafficking in Africa,
Europe, the Near East, the Middle East, North America, Oceana,
South America and South Asia.

     Hammock also will present the keynote address, "Stop the
Violence...With Justice for All," at a luncheon as part of the
workshop April 29.  The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the
Great Southern Hotel, 310 S. High St.  The luncheon is sponsored
by Ohio State's College of Social Work, the Ohio Chapter of NASW
and Columbus Catholic Social Services.

     Doug Adair, anchor of WCMH-TV Channel 4 news, will moderate
a panel discussion of Hammock's comments.  Panelists include Ohio
Rep. Charleta Taveres, D-22; Anthony King, assistant professor at
Case Western Reserve University's Mandel School of Applied Social
Sciences and adviser to the Cuyahoga Metro Housing Authority's
violence prevention project; representatives of Ohio Attorney
General Lee Fisher; and Ohio Sen. Betty Montgomery, R-2.

     Later, Adair will be honored by the Ohio Chapter of NASW and
the National Association of Social Workers for WCMH's violence
prevention and reduction project, "Partners 4 Peace."  The
ceremony will take place during a reception from 5:30-7 p.m. in
the Nicolae Gallery, 641 N. High St.

     Hammock, who is a member of the board of the National
Association of Social Workers, speaks frequently to professionals
and community organizations about issues relating to criminal and
social justice, cultural diversity in the workplace, and cultural
sensitivity in human and health service delivery.
