NEWS ADVISORY:
NEW PROFESSOR AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY OFFICIALS
TO TOUR CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH
Ohio State University's Center for Automotive Research, 930
Kinnear Road, will host a public introduction on Monday, Oct. 10,
of Vadim Utkin, who has been nominated as the first holder of the
Ford Motor Company Chair in Electromechanical Systems. Professor
Utkin has come to Ohio State this fall from Russia where he had a
distinguished career in engineering research. He received the
Lenin Prize for his work in 1972.
John P. McTague, vice president - Technical Affairs for Ford
Motor Company in Dearborn, will attend the event and will comment
on Ford's interest in automotive research and engineering
education. Ohio is known informally as Ford's "second home,"
with major manufacturing and assembly facilities in Lorain, Avon
Lake, Brook Park, Walton Hills, Maumee, Lima, Sharonville,
Batavia and Sandusky. Ford has more than 24,000 employees in
Ohio. In addition, Ford has nearly 500 Ohio State graduates
among its management and technical employees.
The Center for Automotive Research (CAR), founded in 1991,
has recently moved to renovated quarters on Kinnear Road. Some
25 Ohio State faculty members are involved in research to improve
auto design, production and operation. Electromechanics, a blend
of the traditional disciplines of electrical and mechanical
engineering, is vital to the success of the auto industry.
The event will be Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. at CAR, 930 Kinnear Road
(about one block east of Kenny Road). Please park and enter on
the east side of the building. Reporters can interview Professor
Utkin and Ford's McTague and can tour the CAR. Students will
display their electric race car, which won a race this summer,
and their work on a solar-powered car for a competition next
spring. These student projects and examples of faculty research
will offer visual examples of electromechanical systems.
