Conference offers deep look at sustainability – Oct. 1 and 2. The Sustainability COMPAS (Conversations On Morality, Politics, And Society) kicks off with a two-day conference Oct. 1 and 2, featuring a set of distinguished speakers to frame the basic challenges, risks and benefits of achieving a sustainable planet. The conference, which is free and open to all, takes place on the 11^th floor of the Thompson Library, 1858 Neil Ave. Mall.
Speakers include Albert Cho, vice president, Strategy and Business Development at Xylem, Inc., and Andrew Light, director of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy, George Mason University and former staff climate adviser, U.S. Department of State.

Mysteries in Ice exhibit brings polar research to Thompson Library – Oct. 5 – Jan. 3. Mysteries in Ice, a celebration of the 25^th anniversary of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archival Program, takes place in the Thompson Library Gallery, 1858 Neil Ave. Mall, from Oct. 5 to Jan. 3. The historical collections of the Polar Archives are featured along with contemporary items that represent current exploration in ice-covered regions. This exhibit addresses daily life in harsh environments, including lodging and food, as well as the communication of scientific concepts in media and pop culture.
Inside the galleries, visitors can try on gear worn in Antarctica, view an ice core from China, or hold rock samples from remote regions.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s Latino and Latin American Space for Enrichment and Research (LASER) will holda three-day event that includes a grand expo where authors/artists will feature their work, comic book creating workshops for high school and middle school students, academic panels and featured conversations with the artists. Ohio State Alumni Writers Extravaganza – Oct. 2 – 4. More than 20 writers – all alumni of the Department of English’s Creative Writing Program – will showcase their new books and conduct workshops about the writing life, from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 2-4.
Three acclaimed authors and alumnae will kick off the weekend with an Opening Night Reading at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road. Erin Belieu will be reading from her new poetry collection, Slant Six; Mac McClelland, an award-winning human rights journalist, will read from her new memoir, Irritable Hearts: A PTSD Love Story; and Claire Vaye Watkins will read from her new novel, Gold Fame Citrus. Ohio State Airport to host fun-filled day, including one-of-a-kind 5K – Oct 3.
To highlight its contributions to both the flying and non-flying public, The Ohio State University Airport will host a free Open House on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for central Ohio residents.
The open house will feature free Young Eagles flights for kids, classic and modern aircraft and trucks on display, Frasca flight simulators, the award-winning Ohio State University Flight Team, Youth Aviation Adventure and Career Eagles programs and door prizes, as well as tethered hot air balloon rides, helicopter introductory flight lessons and bi-plane rides available for purchase.
In conjunction with the open house, the Don Scott Trot, a 5K on the airport runway, will take place at 7:30 a.m. The airport is located at 2160 W. Case Road. SEE: http://osuairport.org/36.
