Cardinal Turkson to speak at Ohio State – Nov. 2. Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, will visit Ohio State for a community discussion on global sustainability at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St. The Cardinal has become the face of climate change at the Vatican, having led the drafting process of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment. Brutus’ 50th Celebration – Nov. 6. The Ohio State University celebration of the 50th anniversary of Brutus Buckeye continues with a gala event on Friday, Nov. 6.
The event will feature Ohio State’s mascot as he has never been seen before. With a “storytelling” theme, former Ohio State football player and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George will perform as the narrator of the story of Brutus Buckeye, with performances from the mascot with the Ohio State University Marching Band drum line and Ohio State Dance Team, and special appearances from Brutus alumni from the past 50 years. Nearly every student who has portrayed Brutus will be on hand.

Ohio State University trustees and committees to meet – Nov. 4-6. The Ohio State University Board of Trustees and its committees will meet Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 4 – 6. Meetings will be held in the Ross Heart Hospital, 452 W. 10th Ave. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and at the Longaberger Alumni House, 2200 Olentangy River Road, on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5 – 6.
On Wednesday, the Wexner Medical Center Board will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Thursday, the Talent and Compensation and Master Planning and Facilities committees will meet from 8 to 9:45 a.m.; the Advancement and Audit and Compliance committees will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; and the Finance and Academic Affairs and Student Life committees will meet from noon to 1:45 p.m. The board will meet in executive session from 2 to 5 p.m.

U.S. Army Drill Team to perform at Skull Session – Nov. 7. The U.S. Army Drill Team will visit Ohio State and perform at the Skull Session prior to the football game against Minnesota, which is the university’s annual Military Appreciation Game. The drill team will lead the football team to St. John Arena for the Skull Session. Their performance begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. The precision drill team, founded in 1953, travels worldwide with routines using bayonet-tipped rifles. It is led by Army 1st Lt. Lauren Glover, the first female drill team commander in history. Temple Grandin to discuss “How Animals Think and Feel” – Nov. 11. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University and nationally known speaker on autism, will visit the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine on Wednesday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day). She will meet with students in the afternoon and also be available for media interviews between 1 and 2 p.m.
From 6 to 7 p.m. she will present “How Animals Think and Feel” in the Veterinary Medical Center auditorium, 601 Vernon Tharp St. (Access is available on the east side of the building. Admission is $10 or $5 with a Buck ID. Attendees are advised to drive east through the parking lot at the construction zone on Coffey Road and park in the Sisson Hall lot). Speech and Hearing students improve Pre-K literacy scores. Graduate students and clinicians from Ohio State’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic have partnered with Hilltop Preschool on a first-of-its-kind, on-site, pre-K literacy intervention program. Hilltop Preschool is a nonprofit organization offering free preschool to residents of the Hilltop area, on Columbus’ west side. Operated under the Early Start Columbus program with the City of Columbus, all of the children at Hilltop Preschool come from families who are below 125 percent of the poverty level.
In October 2014, 67 percent of Hilltop Preschoolers were falling “below average” on the National Center for Learning Disabilities’ GET READY TO READ! national assessment tool, which determines whether preschool children have the early literacy skills they need to become readers. Only 33 percent of the students achieved scores of “average” or “above average.”
In 2015, graduate students and clinicians from the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic spent 11 weeks at the preschool leading intensive literacy intervention classes. At the end of the program, the preschoolers’ literacy skills were assessed.
The results? Eighty-nine percent of Hilltop Preschool’s students demonstrated higher literacy scores.
Now, Ohio State undergraduate students are building a library at the preschool to house all of the many books the children will be reading. SEE: http://artsandsciences.osu.edu/news/literacy-intervention-and-hilltop-preschool
