Ohio State University trustees and committees to meet – April 6-8. The Ohio State University Board of Trustees and its committees will meet Wednesday through Friday, April 6-8. Meetings will be held in the Ross Heart Hospital, 452 W. 10th Ave., on Wednesday, April 6, and at the Longaberger Alumni House, 2200 Olentangy River Road, on Thursday and Friday, April 7 and 8.
On Wednesday, the Wexner Medical Center Board will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Talent and Compensation Committee will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. On Thursday, the Master Planning and Facilities and Talent and Compensation committees will meet from 8 to 9:45 a.m.; the Advancement and Audit and Compliance committees will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; and the Finance and Academic Affairs and Student Life committees will meet from noon to 1:45 p.m. The board will meet in executive session from 2 to 5 p.m.

Rob Portman to discuss substance use with homeless youth – April 8. Star House, the nation’s only research-based drop-in center for homeless youth, will welcome Sen. Rob Portman on Friday, April 8. With up to 1,500 vulnerable young people living on the streets in central Ohio, Star House reaches a population that is at a high risk for substance use. This makes the drop-in center, housed within The Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Ecology, the perfect place for Portman to reach young people who may have overcome substance use. Portman will visit Star House, 1220 Corrugated Way, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. to ask young people if substance use has impacted their experience of living on the streets and if so, how Star House has helped them overcome it. Battle of the ’Bots competition at Ohio State – April 9. Ohio State’s Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) will be transformed into a rocket launch pad site as 71 teams of first-year engineering honors students compete to see which student-built robot can best complete the required tasks during The Ohio State University College of Engineering’s robot competition.
The event takes place from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the RPAC, 337 W. 17th Ave. Preliminary round matches take place from noon to 3:30, with the single elimination tournament from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m.
Student teams will set their robots in motion around a 12-square-foot course that simulates a rocket launch pad area. The fully autonomous robots have just two minutes to perform specific tasks. The robots are limited in size to a 9-square-inch footprint and constructed of various materials, including sheet metal, PVC, acrylic, plywood and Erector set components.
The event is the culmination of a challenging semester-long design-and-build project for 273 freshmen honors students that puts their new engineering skills to the test and gets them excited about the field of engineering.

Buckeye nation mobilizes for a week of events focused on alleviating hunger – April 9 and 14. The Ohio State University is harnessing the power of its alumni and community to tackle one of the most compelling problems of our time: hunger and food security.
The university will convene the first Buckeye Summit, with an inaugural focus on food security. The summit on April 14 will bring together hundreds of alumni, volunteers, business and community leaders, faculty, staff and students for an interactive town hall with breakout sessions and group discussions, where participants will be asked to contribute their energy, insights, passion and ideas for tackling the complex issue of food security.
Buckeye Summit is part of a new prototype for engagement connecting Ohio State researchers and passionate students to discuss real solutions to such global problems as food security. SEE: https://buckeyesummit.osu.edu/
The Ohio State Alumni Association will tackle hunger on a more local level when it holds a food drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Longaberger Alumni House, 2200 Olentangy River Road. As part of National Volunteer Week, and in support of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, the association is mobilizing Buckeye Nation to help feed local families with donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items. Describing a dissertation in three minutes – April 11. The Graduate School is piloting the “3MT” (Three Minute Thesis) competition at Ohio State, challenging doctoral students to effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience in three minutes using a single PowerPoint slide. Finalists selected from among 50 participants during a preliminary round will compete from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Theater, 1871 N. High St. Faculty and communication specialists will judge the presentations. A $500 prize goes to the first-place winner and the people’s choice selection will receive a $250 award. The final is open to the public and the media. The 3MT competition was developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2008 and is now held at universities across the globe. Paying College Athletes the topic of two panel discussions – April 15. The Ohio State Sports and Society Initiative hosts two panel discussions on Paying College Athletes, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15, at The Faculty Club, 181 South Oval Drive.
The panel on Sports Policy Analysts and Writers takes place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Panelists include sports experts Vince Doria, Matthew Mitten, Joe Nocera, and Andrew Zimbalist. Moderator is Lucia Dunn, professor of economics and co-director of the Sports and Society Initiative at Ohio State.
The panel on Athletes takes place from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Panelists include former Ohio State student-athletes Lawrence Funderburke, John Holman, Marscilla Packer, Shawn Springs, Kelly Trent and Kristin Watt.
