Ohio State hosts panel on athletic activism and social change – April 20. Ohio State's Sports and Society Initiative hosts a panel discussion on the role of athletic activism in social change. The panel, which is free and open to the public, takes place from 7:30 to 9 p.m.at the Blackwell Inn and Phahl Conference Center, 2110 Tuttle Park Place.
Panelists include Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, former NBA player with the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings and the Vancouver Grizzlies; Malcom Jenkins, safety, Philadelphia Eagles and former Ohio State All-American cornerback; and Tommie Smith, an American former track and field athlete and gold medal winner at the 1968 Summer Olympics. His Black Power salute with John Carlos atop the medal podium to protest discrimination against African-Americans remains a symbolic moment in the history of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Panel moderator will be Vince Doria, former senior vice president and director of news, ESPN.

How Ohio State is combatting the leading cause of mortality – April 21. Infectious diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Researchers at Ohio State have made the prevention, detection, and management of infectious diseases a priority. On Friday April 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. they'll demonstrate how their research is contributing to discoveries and real-world solutions around the globe. Ten faculty will give short, TED-style presentations as part of Discovery Talks. The public is invited. Please register to attend. Ohio State Marching Band drum major tryouts open to public – April 22.
Drum major tryouts for The Ohio State University Marching Band’s 2017-2018 season will take place on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m. The tryouts are again open to the public and will be held rain or shine at the Harmon Family Football Park, adjacent to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center (2491 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus, OH).
Six candidates will vie for the positions of drum major and assistant drum major. Each candidate will perform the ramp entrance, a twirling routine and five high aerial tosses. Members of Ohio State’s Athletic Band and 2016 Marching Band will provide the musical accompaniment to the performances.
Candidates will be adjudicated by a panel that includes the band’s directing staff and previous drum majors. The announcement of the 2017 drum major and assistant drum major will take place at the conclusion of tryouts, after results are tabulated.
Seating is limited, and guests are welcome to bring a folding chair and/or blanket to sit on.

Engineering students showcase final projects, inventions – April 25. A steering device that assists children in powered wheelchairs, an app that enhances ESL teaching and learning and a system for sustainable crop production in space are just a few of the projects and inventions that undergraduate engineering students will present on Tuesday, April 25, during the 10th annual Engineering Capstone Design Showcase.
The event takes place from noon to 3:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union Archie Griffin Ballroom, 1739 N. High St.
More than 700 students, representing 14 engineering majors and 20 non-engineering majors, will present over 200 projects at the showcase.

College Ready Ohio to host screening of Sundance-selected documentary, Most Likely To Succeed – April 25. College Ready Ohio will host a free screening of the film Most Likely to Succeed at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 in Campbell Hall 100, 1787 Neil Ave. This event is free and open to the public.
The screening is a part of the critically-acclaimed film’s nationwide campaign to revolutionize schools for the 21st century.
The event is organized by College Ready Ohio, a program created by the Office of Distance Education and eLearning at Ohio State. It is a collaboration among K-12 school districts, higher education, and regional service providers. The program is designed to foster learning experiences that are engaging, relevant, and will prepare Ohio’s students to enter higher education with the depth of knowledge and academic experience necessary to be truly successful. Alumni Association wants volunteers to pack meals for Mid-Ohio Foodbank – April 26. The Ohio State University Alumni Association’s Office of Volunteer Relations will hold a “feed the funnel” meal making and packing party from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 26 at the association headquarters, 2200 Olentangy River Road. All meals will be donated to Mid-Ohio Foodbank to help fight hunger in Columbus.

500 miles-per-gallon is goal of student Supermileage team. Three years ago, Ohio State’s student Supermileage team developed and constructed a single-person vehicle with a fuel-efficiency of 96 mpg. The second year, it more than doubled to 256 mpg. Now in its third year, the team aspires to exceed 500 mpg.
Engineers in Honda’s engine research department are helping students meet that goal by lending their expertise. Honda also donated a small engine to the team so students could take it apart, see how it was designed and then get ideas of ways to modify the Supermileage engine. The SAE Supermileage competition is June 8-9 in Michigan.
For almost 30 years, Ohio State and Honda, through the Honda-Ohio State Partnership, connect students and researchers with industry experts and engineers. Honda’s support of Ohio State faculty, research and students includes more than $50 million in endowments for the university — generated through a collaborative involvement at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio. Nursing students launch initiative to de-stigmatize mental illness.Senior students in the College of Nursing have launched an initiative called “I will help you,” to provide support to people with mental health issues, and give them, their friends and family resources for providing assistance. Football Coach Urban Meyer, Vice President for Student Life Javaune Adams-Gaston, (“Dr. J.”), Vice President for Wellness Bernadette Melnyk and dozens of students “pledge to help” via a video. A second video provides a mental health First Aid Kit. Kate Gawlik, assistant professor of clinical practice in the College of Nursing, received a $5,000 curriculum grant, which provided the resources needed to create the videos and develop a website with additional resources, including four educational modules.
