Optometrist available to offer expert commentary for eclipse stories.
Aaron Zimmerman, associate professor of clinical optometry at The Ohio State University, is available to provide expert commentary for news stories on how to safely view the Aug. 21 solar eclipse.
Zimmerman is the chief of the Student Health Optometry Service and teaches the advanced contact lens lab as well as courses in lasers, injections, and advanced procedures. He has been involved in sports vision research and is a member of the Contact Lens Assessment in Youth (CLAY) study group that has been investigating risk factors for contact lens adverse events. He is a diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry in the Cornea, Contact Lens, and Refractive Technologies section. Ohio State University welcomes students for autumn semester. Students will be moving into residence halls over the next several days ahead of the start of the new school year on Aug. 22. Approximately 14,000 students will live in Columbus campus residence halls.
*Residence Hall Move-in, Saturday, Aug. 19, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.Ohio State’s residence halls open for autumn semester with Move-in. Students will be assisted by some 2,000 Official Welcome Leaders (OWLs, who move in on Aug. 17) who help families unload cars and bring possessions to assigned rooms. Move-in day is highly orchestrated to avoid confusion and congestion due to the high number of vehicles and people on campus. Motorists are urged to avoid the campus area during move-in.
*Student Involvement Fair, Sunday, Aug. 20, 4 to 7 p.m., the Oval. Ohio State has nearly 1,400 student organizations. During Welcome Week each year, representatives of many of them, as well as campus departments and community agencies, set up a booth or display on the Oval so students can become involved in areas that meet their needs and interests.
* President’s Convocation, Monday, Aug. 21, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., Schottenstein Center. Convocation is the official welcome event at Ohio State for first-year students. New students hear from President Drake, faculty, administrators and special guests, and are introduced to some time-honored university traditions such as “Carmen Ohio.”* First Day of Classes, Tuesday, Aug. 22. Volunteers will staff campus locator booths across campus to help students find their way to classes.

Groundbreaking for Ohio State Airport enhancements set for National Aviation Day – Aug. 19. University leaders will celebrate the groundbreaking of the Austin E. Knowlton Executive Terminal and Aviation Learning Center at The Ohio State University Airport at Don Scott Field at 10 a.m. on National Aviation Day (Saturday, Aug. 19). The ceremony takes place in the Worthington Industries hangar at the airport, located at 2160 West Case Road.
President Michael V. Drake and College of Engineering Dean David B. Williams will be joined by representatives of the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation and other esteemed guests to celebrate upcoming enhancements to the airport. The two-phase project will support construction of a new aviation education and research facility with state-of-the-art flight simulators, research labs and classrooms. Combined with a modern flight terminal, the new facilities will integrate education with airport operations, benefiting Ohio State students as well as Columbus-area residents and visitors.The groundbreaking coincides with aviation milestones at Ohio State – 2017 marks the 100thanniversary of the university’s aviation education program and the 75th anniversary of its airport. Construction to close football game day parking lots beginning September 5. The straightening and elevating of Cannon Drive will support future growth of the university and the Medical Center by creating 12 acres of developable land, serving as future flood protection, creating an eventual north-south connection between King and Lane Avenues and enhancing green space in the Olentangy River corridor.
The first phase of construction is expected to run through the fall of 2019. As a result, starting Sept. 5, Cannon Drive will close for construction between 12th Avenue and Medical Center Drive. Access to the SR-315 on-ramp and off-ramp will be maintained during football season - though intermittent closures could occur this fall during overnight hours.
The Polo and Dodd surface parking lots, located along Cannon Drive, will close the night of Sept. 4. The project will remove 2,100 parking spaces. SEE: http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/genrel/081517aaa.html.
