Ohio State recognized for high-quality undergraduate teaching

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University’s strong commitment to teaching and learning has won the university national recognition. In its 2018 Best Colleges guidebook, U.S. News & World Report lists the university among those with an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Ohio State is No. 8 among public universities and No. 17 nationally for Best Undergraduate Teaching.

“Teaching and learning are key components of the university’s strategic plan, and this recognition is an indicator of our continued focus in this area,” said President Michael V. Drake.

For example, Ohio State launched its University Institute for Teaching and Learning in August 2016. The institute is designed to help instructors share successful teaching techniques and lead to increased adoption of modern methods that enhance student learning. Proceeds from a $10 million endowment from Nike fund the institute.

U.S. News also names Ohio State to its list of top 50 High School Counselor’s College Picks, a strong indicator of academic reputation.

Overall, the publication ranks Ohio State No. 16 among public universities and No. 54 among all universities.

Ohio State’s strong support of veterans earned the university recognition as one of the top national Best Colleges for Veterans. The ranking cites Ohio State’s participation in federal initiatives that help veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees.

In addition, Ohio State is recognized for offering several programs that help students succeed, including First Year Experience and Learning Communities. The programs have been honored each year as “stellar examples of each program type” since U.S. News began evaluating them in 2002.

The survey also ranks undergraduate business and engineering programs. Among both public and private universities, Fisher College of Business is rated No. 15 in the nation (No. 7 among publics). Its logistics program is ranked No. 6 and its production/operation management and accounting programs are ranked No. 10. Among Ph.D.-granting private and public universities, Ohio State’s College of Engineering is rated No. 30 (No. 16 among publics).
