“Bucks Bus” promotes student financial wellness – Oct. 11. The Office of Student Life’s Scarlet and Gray Financial coaches will offer interested students a ride to class on a “Bucks Bus” on Wednesday, October 11, and have them answer questions about financial literacy for prizes along the way. Patterned after the television show “Cash Cab,” the event will promote financial education and give students the opportunity to see just how much they know about their money. Ride-alongs in the golf cart can be arranged. CONTACT: Dave Isaacs, Student Life Media Relations, Isaacs.84@osu.edu, 614-292-8424. $3.3 million NIH grant will support research to improve minority birth outcomes. Bernadette Melnyk, chief wellness officer and dean of the College of Nursing, has been awarded a $3.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities to study a healthy lifestyle intervention for high-risk pregnant minority women.
In hopes of finding a way to lower disparities in birth outcomes, the study will test a prenatal program designed to build cognitive behavioral skills in women experiencing emotional distress. If successful, it could be used to improve pregnancy, birth and postnatal outcomes nationally. While screening for depression in all pregnant women is a recent public health directive, screening alone will not produce positive outcomes, Melnyk said.
Melnyk, who also serves as Ohio State’s vice president for health promotion, will co-lead the study with a researcher at Boston College. The work will be conducted in New York and Ohio. CONTACT: Lainie Bradshaw, Bradshaw.162@osu.edu, 937-776-2335.
