Author J.D. Vance delivers lecture – Nov. 7. J.D. Vance will propose a hands-on approach to problems facing his native state of Ohio: opioid addiction, under-preparedness of the workforce and domestic instability. Vance will deliver, “Beyond Hillbilly Elegy: Recovery, Rebirth, Renewal” as part of the Provost’s Discovery Themes Lecture Program. The lecture takes place from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St.
Through his nonprofit organization, Our Ohio Renewal, Vance, a 2009 alumnus of Ohio State, will tackle these issues that shaped his upbringing in Middletown, Ohio, subject of Hillbilly Elegy, Vance’s No. 1 New York Times best-seller.

American flags ceremony to honor veterans – Nov. 9. Ohio State's Vets 4 Vets, the student chapter of the Student Veterans of America, will be on the South Oval from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, planting American flags to honor Ohio State's women and men veterans. The public is invited to join the celebration and plant a flag in honor of a family member or friend who is a veteran.
Last year, more than 3,000 flags were displayed, representing every Ohio State faculty, staff and student veteran. For more information visit the Vets 4 Vets Facebook page.

Ohio State celebrates World Kindness Day by packing meals – Nov. 13. Ohio State’s Office of Student Life, Department of Athletics and Alumni Association are hosting aspecial service event in honor of World Kindness Day.
A group of 600 volunteers will gather at French Field House, 460 Woody Hayes Drive, to pack 210,000 meals through The Pack Shack: a high-energy feed-the-funnel party. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13. Volunteers will include alumni, students, athletes, employees, fans and families. Meals will be donated to families in central Ohio and in a hurricane-affected area. SEE: Kindness Week.

College of Social Work awarded $3 million to address substance abuse in Ohio. The Ohio State University College of Social Work has received a $3 million grant to address substance abuse problems in Ohio – one of the largest grants ever awarded in the college’s 100-year history.
The grant, funded by the Children’s Bureau of the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will support regional partnership intervention activities in Fairfield and Pickaway counties to reduce child abuse and neglect among families with substance use problems. For Pickaway County, 100 percent of substance-involved families were due to opioid misuse, while 58 percent of all substance-involved cases in Fairfield County involved opioids.
