Media Advisory: NIH Director visits Ohio State to discuss opioid crisis

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health will be at Ohio State on March 22 to talk with university researchers about combatting the opioid and addiction crisis.

Collins will participate in a roundtable discussion with researchers and other experts at 10 a.m. in the Patricia & Steven Gabbe Conference Room (L045) in The James Cancer Hospital, 460 W. 10th Ave.

Following the roundtable discussion, the inaugural winners of Ohio State’s new Opioid Innovation Fund grants will be announced at 11:30 a.m. in room B050 at the James.

Media are encouraged to attend both events. Collins and others will be available for interviews following the Opioid Innovation Fund announcement.

Collins was sworn in as the 16th director of the NIH on Aug. 17, 2009. A physician-geneticist noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and leadership of the international Human Genome Project, he oversees the work of the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world.

In 2017, Ohio State announced a commitment of more than $1 million to the Opioid Innovation Fund to advance understanding of the crisis and inspire new, multidisciplinary partnerships that address the epidemic.
