Night out for children on the autism spectrum – March 27. Eating out with children on the autism spectrum can pose special challenges – so much so, parents often don’t attempt it. Students studying hospitality management at the College of Education and Human Ecology are making such a dining experience possible and enjoyable on March 27 when they host Hospitality Listens, a free dinner for children on the autism spectrum and their families. The event features a meal planned and prepared by the students, who have been trained to serve and assist guests with autism. Included will be activities and “chill zones” for children. Food and space are sponsored by Ohio State Student Life Dining Services. Additional support comes from the Hospitality Management Advisory Board with industry members. Families were invited by OCALI, an organization working to ensure that people with disabilities have the opportunity to live their best lives. The event takes place in the Archie M. Griffin Ballroom in the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St. CONTACT: Janet Ciccone, Ciccone.2@osu.edu, 614-292-5338.

The Future of the All-Volunteer Force and Democracy in America – March 29. When the United States ended the draft and moved to an all-volunteer military in 1973, most political and military leaders assumed that the nation would reactivate the draft in the event of another major, long-lasting war. But that didn't happen. The U.S. fought long and costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with an all-volunteer force (AVF), even as some service members were deployed for three and even four tours of duty. On Thursday, March 29, a conference sponsored by the Mershon Center and the Glenn College will explore the issue as part of a series of national events examining the all-volunteer force and democracy in America. The conference takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mershon Center, 1502 Neil Ave. SEE: https://mershoncenter.osu.edu/eventcalendar/event-calendar/eventdetail/657/-/the-future-of-the-all-volunteer-force-and-democracy-in-america.html.
