Ohio State faculty offer expertise on terrorist attacks

Several Ohio State faculty members are available for media interviews to discuss many sidebar aspects of the terrorist attacks of Tuesday (9/11).  They include:

Daniel Christie, professor of psychology at Marion. (740) 389-6786; christie.1@osu.edu

  • Christie is past president of the Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence.  He can discuss the trauma and mental health problems that may face some victims and neighbors of the violence.  He can also discuss the anger and desire for retaliation that many Americans may have in the wake of the violence. Christie has also done research on children and their perceptions of the Kosovo bombings and Columbine shootings.

Louise Douce, director of Counseling and Consultation Services. (614) 292-5766.

  • Douce can discuss counseling services offered to students on campus, including international students and teaching assistants already in Columbus for the start of school.  Douce recommends that people limit their exposure to the vivid scenes by restricting television viewing time as the tragedy unfolds.

  • Krosnick can discuss how media coverage of the terrorist attacks will shape public opinion.

Oliver G. McGee III, chair and professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science.  (614) 292-3455 or (614) 292-2771.

  • An expert in structural engineering and transportation, McGee can discuss how security concerns as they relate to structure.  McGee returned to Ohio State to chair the department where he was once a faculty member.  McGee recently served in the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Senior Policy Analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and at MIT's Departments of Aeronautics & Astronautics, and Civil & Environmental Engineering.

  • Millett, who recently visited Lebanon, can talk about terrorism and the Middle East.

John Mueller, professor and Woody Hayes Chair of National Security Studies, Mershon Center.  (614) 247-6007; bbbb@osu.edu

  • Mueller is and expert in international relations, public opinion, national security policy, and diplomatic and military history.  Among his books are War, Presidents, and Public Opinion, Retreat From Doomsday: The Obsolescence of Major War, and Policy and Opinion in the Gulf War.

  • O’Connell can discuss international law on response to terrorism.  She has written several books and articles about enforcement of international law, security issues, and the use of force.

John Quigley, professor of law and political science. (614) 292-1764; quigley.2@osu.edu

  • Quigley is an expert on international law and can discuss possible reactions by the United States to the terrorist attacks.  He is also an expert on the Middle East conflict and can comment on the role this may have played in the attack.

  • An expert in financial markets, Sanders can discuss anticipated impacts on financial markets and oil prices as a result of Tuesday's attacks.

  • Travialo is an expert in international law and the use of military force in response to terrorists.  He served in the United States Army and is currently a Colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, United States Army Reserve.
