Ohio State faculty, staff tour northwest Ohio
COLUMBUS – Ohio State University faculty and staff representing 20 areas of study will tour northwest Ohio Sept. 9-10, participating in the sixth annual Roads Scholars Tour. The tour allows scholars to experience firsthand Ohio State’s role in the state’s agriculture, education, business and industry.
The bus tour, led by Keith Smith, associate dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and director of Ohio State extension services, will stop in five cities: Mansfield, Celeryville, Toledo, Bowling Green and Findlay.
Nearly 60 scholars will visit Ohio State’s Mansfield regional campus, survey agriculture, explore research and teaching partnerships, view the impact of county extension services and meet with current and future Ohio State students.
Members of the media are welcome to interview scholars and participate in any portion of the tour. The itinerary is below.

Monday, Sept. 9 - Mansfield, Celeryville and Toledo
8:30 a.m. Depart Columbus
10 a.m. - noon Mansfield Regional Campus Tour - Mansfield, Ohio.
· Visit will highlight the development and growth of Ohio State’s regional campuses and facilities.
12:45-2:30 p.m.Diversity of Ohio Agriculture - Celeryville, Ohio
· Bruce Buurma Muck Farm & Farm Labor Relations Program. Scholars will tour one of the oldest and most diverse areas of farmland in northwest Ohio. One of the top migrant camps in the state, Buurma Farm features 2,500 acres of farmland and approximately 30 different crops.
2:30 p.m. Depart for Toledo
4-5 p.m. Research & Learning Partnerships - Owens Corning Corporate Headquarters, Toledo
· Presentation on Owens Corning-Ohio State research partnerships and facility tour.
5:30 p.m. Ohio State Overnight Headquarters - Radisson Hotel, Downtown Toledo
6:45-8:30 p.m. Evening with OSU Students & Young Scholars - Radisson Hotel
· Reception, dinner and panel discussion. Participants include Ohio State students from the Toledo area and local high school enrollees in the Young Scholars initiative, developed statewide to increase the enrollment of first-generation minority students at Ohio State.
Tuesday, Sept. 10 - Toledo, Bowling Green and Findlay
8:30-10 a.m. Ohio High School Visits – Toledo Bowsher and Waite high schools.
· Visits include a tour and open discussion between Ohio State faculty and local students.
10-11:15 a.m. Partnerships in Operation - Lucas County extension agency
· Toledo Urban Gardens & Toledo Botanical Gardens tours showcase the success of community building. Scholars will visit two of 34 urban gardens – once vacant lots – maintained by nearly 600 residents and neighborhood organizations in addition to the Toledo Botanical Gardens.
11:20 a.m.-NoonAgricultural Economic Development - Toledo Botanical Gardens

· Panel discussion will address county extension projects, collaborative efforts to fund local urban horticulture programs and marketing initiatives.
12:45 p.m. Depart for Bowling Green
1:30-3 p.m. Research with University Partners - Bowling Green State University
· Discussion with BGSU faculty and members of the Ohio Plant Biotechnology Consortium
3 p.m. Depart for Findlay
3:30-4:15 p.m. Impacting Ohioans - Hancock County OSU Extension Agency
· Presentations on Family and Children First and Read and Succeed programs.
4:45 p.m. Tour of Mazza Collection - University of Findlay
· Scholars will tour the first and largest teaching gallery specializing in the original children’s book artwork. Collection features more than 2,100 original pieces of art.
