Ohio State faculty, staff tour seven cities in western Ohio

COLUMBUS – Meeting with prospective college students, learning about university/community partnerships and understanding Ohio State’s role as a land-grant university are goals for the participants of the 2004 Roads Scholars Tour.

This year, approximately 40 new or newly tenured faculty and key staff members will travel through western Ohio on Tuesday (9/14) and Wednesday (9/15) as part of the eighth-annual tour. The tour gives participants a glimpse into the university’s statewide outreach efforts and the role it plays in the state’s agriculture, education, and business sectors.

Approximately 550 Ohio State faculty members and staff have gone on the tour since 1997.

This year’s tour will stop in seven Ohio cities: East Liberty, Lima, Dayton, Beavercreek, Wilberforce, Yellow Springs and Jamestown.

2004 Ohio State Roads Scholars Tour Itinerary

Tuesday, Sept. 14
East Liberty, Lima, Dayton

8:15 a.m. – Depart from Longaberger Alumni House in Columbus.

9 to 10:30 a.m. – Transportation Research Center, Inc. – East Liberty, Ohio.
·Visit highlights the partnership among Honda, Ohio State, the state of Ohio and the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). After a presentation, the group will tour the facility. Editor’s Note: No cameras are allowed

10:30 a.m. – Depart for Ohio State Lima campus.

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Lima Regional Campus Tour – Lima, Ohio.
·Visit includes a tour of the regional campus. Lima is one of four regional campuses (OSU Lima, OSU Marion, OSU Mansfield and OSU Newark). The university also has the Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) in Wooster. A highlight of the tour is the Community Policing program. Chief Greg Garlock of the Lima Police Department will discuss the partnership between the university and the community and how the program is adapted based on going research by an Ohio State geography professor.

1:30 p.m. – Depart for Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

3 to 5 p.m. – Wright Patterson Airport Base – Dayton, Ohio.
·Visit includes a presentation about Ohio State’s partnerships with Wright Patterson Air Force Base. In addition to other partnerships, Wright Pat’s Air Force Research Laboratories and Ohio State are among the partners of a Third Frontier program to create the Ohio Center for Advanced Propulsion and Power.

5 p.m. – Depart for Adventure Central.

5:30 to 8 p.m. – Adventure Central – Dayton, Ohio.
·Visit includes a tour of Adventure Central, which is an education center for youth ages 5-18 located at Wesleyan MetroPark. Later, members of Ohio State’s Young Scholars Program, which includes low-income students in sixth grade through high school from the nine largest urban school districts and communities in Ohio, will join participants of the tour for dinner. This will be followed by a panel discussion with current Ohio State students, including a former Young Scholar.

8:15 p.m. – Depart for Ohio State overnight headquarters at the Dayton Marriot in Dayton.

Wednesday, Sept. 15
Beavercreek, Wilberforce, Yellow Springs and Jamestown

8 to 8:30 a.m. – Depart for Beavercreek High School.

8:30 to 10 a.m. – Beavercreek High School – Beavercreek, Ohio.
·Visit includes an open dialogue among senior high school students, Ohio State’s student government leaders and faculty and key staff about issues affecting college.

10 a.m. – Depart for National Afro American and Cultural Center.

10:30 to noon – National Afro American and Cultural Center – Wilberforce, Ohio.
·Participants will tour the museum. They also will meet with presidents of Central State University and Wilberforce University.

Noon – Depart for Young’s Jersey Dairy.

12:15 to 1:15 p.m. – Young’s Jersey Dairy – Yellow Springs, Ohio.
·Visit will highlight partnership with Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Studies. The college has offered assistance with food safety and production issues.

1:15 p.m. – Depart for Groco Farm.

1:45 to 3:15 p.m. – Groco Farm – Jamestown, Ohio.
·Visit includes a tour of the farm and a discussion that will highlight the relationship between Groco Farm and Ohio State Extension.

3:15 p.m. – Depart for OSU Extension, Clark County.

4:15 to 6 p.m. – OSU Extension, Clark County – Springfield, Ohio.
·Visit includes a tour of the community gardens.

6:30 p.m. – Return to Longaberger Alumni House.
