Ohio State hosts First-Year Leadership Collaborative
COLUMBUS – The Ohio State University through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience (UAFYE) will host a First-Year Leadership Collaborative conference for a selected group of incoming freshmen.
The conference will be held Tuesday (9/6) through Friday (9/9) at the NorthPointe Conference Center, 9243 Columbus Pike in Lewis Center, Ohio. Special events also will be held on campus and throughout the Columbus area.
Phyllis Miller, director of FYE programs, said the conference is one of the few in the country designed to enrich the talent and leadership potential of students prior to their official enrollment this fall.
"We want to provide these future Buckeyes with an early start on the tools and training that will help accelerate their success as leaders at Ohio State," Miller said.
Fifty-seven participants were chosen through a selective application process that gauged their high potential for success and demonstrated achievement in various areas, including school and community organizations, and community service. The conference was developed through a grant from the Hillsdale Foundation, Inc.
Each student will receive a leadership analysis and attend sessions that address ethics, networking, skill building, public speaking and professional dress. Future opportunities for leadership at Ohio State also will be discussed.
Miller added that providing students with an opportunity to meet a few of the university's own distinguished leaders played an important part in the program planning.
Highlights during the week include a dinner with Sen. John Glenn, a reception with Archie Griffin, president and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, and a closing banquet with University President Karen Holbrook.

Tuesday, Sept. 6
• Welcome Lunch - Richard Smith, executive vice president of Net Jets, Inc., and current Ohio State student and motivational speaker Yaves Ellis are the featured speakers.
• "Real World: Columbus" – Students and staff members will spend an evening in downtown Columbus where they will meet with city leaders, enjoy dinner and visit area landmarks.
Wednesday, Sept. 7
• Student Leadership Luncheon - Suz Scharer, president, Undergraduate Student Government is the guest speaker.
• "Real World: OSU" – The John Glenn Institute will be the setting for dinner with Senator and Annie Glenn at Page Hall, 1810 College Road. Following a campus tour, students will attend a reception with Archie Griffin at Ohio Stadium.
Thursday, Sept. 8
• "Making A Difference Community Luncheon" – Janet Jackson, president and CEO of The United Way will address students and guests.
• Celebration Banquet – President Karen Holbrook will highlight the accomplishments of the Leadership Collaborative.
Friday, Sept. 9
• Ohio State vs. Texas Tailgate – The closing event will treat students and their families to a Texas style barbecue in preparation to the Ohio State vs. Texas football game.
