Ohio State is sharing expertise, resources with local schools

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State University is giving high-school students a tour of campus laboratories and is co-sponsoring a holiday party at Weinland Park Elementary School on Thursday (12/19).

Honors chemistry students from Upper Arlington High School will tour four laboratories from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday (12/19) at the Environmental Molecular Science Institute (EMSI), 100 West 18th Ave. The 30 students are currently enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry or Organic Chemistry. EMSI Professors Linda Weavers, Mike Freitas, Yu-Ping Chin and research scientist Sergey Zalyubovsky will explain instrumentation and materials, and offer demonstrations. Each 30-minute tour is designed to enhance their high school science curriculum and offer opportunities to ask questions and learn what it takes to become a scientist.

On the east side of High Street, the Ohio State P-12 Learning Bridge program is teaming up with Communities in Schools to sponsor a holiday party for the children attending Weinland Park Elementary School, located at 211 E. 7th Ave. The holiday party will take place on Thursday (12/19). Media are invited to attend from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Various groups at Ohio State are sponsoring individual classrooms by purchasing snacks and small gifts for children. The Learning Bridge at Ohio State works to improve the education of children and youth in 13 public schools and various agencies that serve families living in the neighborhoods around the university.
