Ohio State names leader for technology transfer

COLUMBUS – Jean E. Schelhorn has been named associate vice president for Technology Transfer and Commercialization efforts at The Ohio State University. Schelhorn will begin her duties on Feb. 15.

Robert T. McGrath, Ohio State senior vice president for research, said, "I'm delighted to have Dr. Schelhorn joining our team within the Office of Research. She has a demonstrated history of accomplishment in creating successful university – industry collaborations, and an impressive record on commercialization of technology innovations."

Schelhorn will oversee Ohio State efforts in identifying, protecting, and commercializing intellectual property developed by faculty, students, and staff. She will serve as primary spokesperson on technology transfer and will build collaborations with public and private entities to commercialize intellectual property and foster economic growth.

Currently, Schelhorn is vice president for intellectual property strategy and development at Battelle, one of the premier technology development and commercialization companies in the world. Her work spans medical devices and therapeutics, software, energy solutions, materials, construction products and fuel cells. Her present role at Battelle includes important partnerships with Ohio State, including identifying market applications for OSU's Cardiovascular Bioengineering Enterprise.

Prior to joining Battelle in 1999, Schelhorn held various technical and management positions within Owens-Corning including director of technology for the roofing systems strategic business unit – an activity that spanned twenty manufacturing sites and supported one billion dollars of the company's annual sales. During her 18 years with Owens-Corning, she directed or participated in projects in North America, Europe and Asia.

"Ohio State is very fortunate to have recruited Dr. Schelhorn," said Ohio State President Karen A. Holbrook. "I am confident that our research program will benefit greatly from her creative approaches to developing commercial enterprises. Jean has been and will continue to be an integral part of our growing partnership with Battelle."

Carl F. Kohrt, president and CEO of Battelle, added, "Jean is a world class science and technology professional. While she will be missed here at Battelle, I'm delighted to see her taking a leadership role in technology transfer and commercialization at Ohio State. Her depth of knowledge of Battelle's technologies and business practices will be a terrific asset for further expanding the alliance between Battelle and Ohio State."

Schelhorn is an accomplished inventor with 11 awarded and 8 pending U.S. patents, accompanied by roughly 30 associated international patents. She earned a B.S. degree in biochemistry from Queens College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from Northwestern University.

Schelhorn's appointment culminates a national search that was chaired by William A. Baeslack, dean of the College of Engineering.
