Ohio State to host University Research Lecture Series

COLUMBUS – Martha Nussbaum, one of the most sought-after and widely recognized lecturers in the fields of law, philosophy and women’s studies, will be featured in The Ohio State University Research Lecture Series at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (3/13) in The Ohio Union West Ballroom, 1739 N. High St. A reception will be held from 4-5 p.m. in the main lounge. Both events are free and open to the public.

Nussbaum, professor of law and ethics at the University of Chicago, endorses a set of basic entitlements for women. Her lecture is entitled “Gender, Development and the Capabilities Approach.”

The lecture series was developed in March 2002 by the Ohio State Office of Research to bring world-renowned researchers to the Columbus campus for an exchange and discussion of global ideas and issues. Nussbaum is the fourth lecturer to appear in the series.

Nussbaum, who also holds appointments in the Department of Philosophy and the Divinity School, is an award-winning writer. The author of 10 books, “Sex and Social Justice,” was recognized by the North American Society for Social Philosophy in 2000.

Nussbaum received her bachelor’s degree from New York University and her master’s and doctorate from Harvard. She will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree at the close of the program.
