Ohio State to welcome first-year students at Convocation 2004

COLUMBUS – University President Karen A. Holbrook and select faculty, staff and students will officially welcome Ohio State’s best academically prepared freshman class at Convocation 2004. The event is set for 10 a.m. Monday (9/20) in St. John Arena, 410 Woody Hayes Drive.

Convocation will mark the beginning of college life for approximately 5,900 first-year students. During the ceremony, students will experience their first academic procession; receive scarlet-and-gray colored tassels as a symbol of their eventual graduation; be introduced to Ohio State history and traditions; and learn the words to the school’s alma mater, “Carmen Ohio.”

First-year students this year have entered Ohio State with higher than ever average ACT and SAT scores, while more are in the top 10 percent and top 25 percent of their high school class. The university also has more University Scholars, who are students in the top 3 percent of their graduating classes and achieve an ACT composite score of 29 or above or a combined SAT score of 1300 or above.

Following the ceremony, the Ohio State Marching Band will lead the students through the Ohio Stadium en route to under the south stands where the President’s Picnic and Buckeye Bash and the Student Involvement Fair will take place from noon to 4 p.m. At the Student Involvement Fair, first-year students can learn how to get involved at Ohio State by getting information on nearly 500 student organizations, university departments and local businesses.

Additionally, Buckeye Welcome, a university reception for new transfer and Regional campus change students, will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday (9/20) at Weigel Hall, 1866 College Road.
