Ohio State University names new police chief

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY NAMES NEW POLICE CHIEF

     COLUMBUS -- Ronald A. Michalec has been named chief of The
Ohio State University Police Department, effective Feb. 1.
Michalec, 43, has been deputy chief for three years and for the
past seven months has directed the department's operations.

     The University Police Department provides all policing
services for Ohio State and is staffed by 56 law enforcement
officers in addition to support personnel.

     In announcing the appointment, John Kleberg, assistant vice
president of business and administration, noted that Michalec had
effectively managed the department for the past several months.

     "Ron has been active in developing and promoting a community
policing model, and he has been supportive of the department's
bicycle patrol and other innovative police practices," Kleberg
said.  "I am pleased that he will accept the position as chief."

     Janet Pichette, vice president for business and
administration, also cited Michalec's effectiveness as a manager
and his understanding of the university.  "He is sensitive to the
uniqueness of a university community and has been aggressive in
promoting communication between the police and all members of our
community," she said.

     Michalec came to Ohio State in January 1991 from Hudson,
Ohio, where he had been police chief for nearly nine years.
Prior to that, he had been police chief of Munroe Falls, Ohio.

     Michalec earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1972 and
a master's degree in technical education in 1980, both from the
University of Akron.  He graduated from the Ohio Peace Officer's
Training Academy in 1974 and has attended numerous investigative
specialty schools.

     He also taught criminal justice courses part-time at the
University of Akron before he came to Ohio State.
