Ohio State will award diplomas to largest class ever

Ohio State’s efforts to boost student retention rates while improving the academic excellence of the student body are showing some very concrete results. The largest graduating class in the history of the university will earn degrees at spring quarter commencement exercises on Sunday (6/13).

The university has devoted significant resources in the past several years, as part of the Academic Plan, on recruiting and retaining better prepared students, as well as improving academic advising to help students graduate in a more timely way.

The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in Ohio Stadium. Approximately 5,600 students are expected to participate in the spring quarter commencement, which is being held on a Sunday, instead of a Friday, for the first time since 1943.

Erin Moriarty, an award-winning CBS correspondent and two-time graduate of The Ohio State University, will deliver the commencement address.

In addition, four individuals will be honored for their contributions to society and academics, and their dedication to the university. The honorary Doctor of Science degree will be presented to David W. Harvey, an internationally recognized geographer and social scientist. Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to Frank E. Bazler, an enthusiastic supporter of his alma mater for more than half a century; Virginia Hutchison Bazler, who with her husband, Frank, has served her alma mater in many ways; and Manuel Tzagournis, M.D., vice president for health sciences and dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health emeritus at The Ohio State University.
