Ohio State’s Mount Scholars lend hand to community

More than 100 students will take part in outreach projects as a part of Mount Legacy Week, May 1 through 12. Student groups from the Mount Leadership Society will focus on community service projects, from organizing a community cleanup to volunteering at a juvenile correctional facility.

Students in the Mount Leadership Society divided themselves into 10 separate teams to take part in a variety of community projects, which are designed and organized by students.

In its third year, the Mount Leadership Society is a scholars’ program at Ohio State, designed to show students the value of leadership and service. The community service events planned during Mount Legacy Week are intended to honor the late Ruth Weimer Mount.

Mount joined Ohio State in 1953 as the assistant to the dean of women. She was named the university’s first dean of students in 1968. During her career, she also served as president of National Mortar Board Inc., the Association of College Honor Societies, and the National Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors. Mount frequently volunteered in the Ohio State and Columbus communities to help improve the quality of life for others.

Mount Legacy Week events will include:

·May 1, Tree Dedication Ceremony, 6:30 p.m. near the Halloran House, 23 Curl Drive. A tree will be planted in memory of the late Ruth Mount. This event is the kickoff for Mount Legacy Week.

·May 1 to 12, Recycling in Halloran House, 23 Curl Drive. This event is a competition among the Mount Scholars, who are residents of Halloran House to recycle the most goods. The goal is to establish a permanent recycling program in Halloran House.

·May 4, Dodge Park Clean-up, 3 to 6 p.m. at Dodge Park. The Mount Scholars will take part in a cleanup at this park.

·May 5, AIDS Walk, 2 p.m. at the Columbus Bicentennial Park. A group of Mount Scholars are participating in this year’s AIDS Walk.

·May 5, House Meals, 6 p.m. at the Ronald McDonald House, 574 E. 18th St. The Mount Scholars will bring a full-course meal to the Ronald McDonald House to feed 40 people, including sick children and their families.

·May 6, Violence Forum, 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Halloran House, 23 Curl Drive. A movie will be played and a dialogue about schools and violence will follow.

·May 7, Women’s Self-Defense, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Raney Commons, 47 Curl Drive. A certified self-defense instructor will teach women on campus self-defense.

·May 7, Political Debate, 6 p.m. in the Browning Amphitheatre near Mirror Lake. Ohio State’s College Democrats and Republicans will debate political issues. In case of rain, the event is scheduled to move to Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Ave.

·May 10, Shelving Project, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the YWCA, 64 S. 4th Street. A team of Mount Scholars will clean out a closet filled with supplies and donations given to the YWCA last year at Christmas. The supplies will be organized so they can be easily accessible in the future.

·May 11, Juvenile Correctional Facility Volunteering, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Juvenile Correctional Facility, 399 W. Front St. The team of volunteers will help directors prepare facility for inspection.

·May 19, Adopt-A-Street, 10 a.m. on East Norwich Avenue between North High Street and Indianola Avenue. Mount Leadership Society adopted a street through the Undergraduate Student Government and will be holding three clean-up days to pick up litter on the street and to inform homeowners about Ohio State’s efforts to reduce the trash on Norwich Avenue. This is the last clean-up day.

·Through May 29, Food Collection, North Campus Residence Halls. The Mount Scholars will be collecting non-perishable food donations in the residence halls.
