Peter Scott to Address Summer Grads

PETER SCOTT TO ADDRESS SUMMER QUARTER GRADUATES

COLUMBUS -- Commencement exercises for summer quarter
graduates of The Ohio State University will be held Aug. 31 in
St. John Arena. Some 1,850 degrees will be awarded in the
ceremonies, which begin at 9:30 a.m.

The commencement speaker will be entrepreneur Peter L.
Scott. A 1949 graduate of Ohio State in electrical engineering,
Scott had a remarkable business career, retiring in 1991 as
chairman of Black & Decker Corp. after having held top-level
positions with several major electronic companies.

Throughout his career, Scott showed continuous ability to
revitalize slumping organizations by bringing them into fast-
growing technological markets. Beginning with his first job as a
design engineer, he sought opportunities to innovate. Within
three years of his graduation from Ohio State, he had founded his
own company, the first of three he would establish. This firm
grew from a garage operation to $8 million sales within five
years and was acquired by Dresser Industries, which Scott joined
as president of Dresser Electronics.

After taking an 18-month retirement to live aboard a yacht
in the Florida keys, he returned to the business world in 1964 as
founder of Scott Electronics, which later merged with NCR Corp.
His next move was to United Technologies, where he was executive
vice president from 1975-1983. In 1983, Scott founded Technology
Transitions Inc., a venture capital firm which concentrated its
investment interest on the growing entrepreneurial activity in
New England. In 1985, he merged TTI with the Emhart Corp., which
in turn merged with Black & Decker in 1989.

Scott has lent his leadership to such national and non
profit organizations as The Business Roundtable, American Defense
Preparedness Association, the Navy League of the United States,
the President's Advisory Council for Trade Negotiations, and the
Boy Scouts.
