Polar Researcher Featured on ABC-TV Special

                       NEWS ADVISORY:
OHIO STATE POLAR RESEARCHER FEATURED ON ABC-TV NEWS SPECIAL

COLUMBUS -- Lonnie Thompson, professor of geological
sciences and research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center
at Ohio State University, will be featured on a nationally
televised one-hour news special about global warming on Saturday
(April 11) evening.

The program, ABC News Saturday Night, will air locally on
WSYX-TV (Channel 6) at 10 p.m.

The show takes a detailed look at the many scientific and
political issues surrounding global warming. It will include an
on-campus interview with Thompson as well as a look at his
research.

Thompson, a glaciologist, conducts his research in the most
remote parts of the world. His team has extracted ice cores from
glaciers in tropical and sub-tropical climates in Asia and South
America that provide a frozen record of weather dating back at
least 40,000 years. Thompson has observed that ice caps in these
areas are melting faster than anticipated, providing compelling
evidence of global warming.

The program is linked to ABCnews.com to allow viewers to

discussed.
