Police Learning Rape Defense

     UNIVERSITY POLICE LEARNING TO TEACH RAPE DEFENSE SYSTEM

Ohio State University Police and others will learn how to
instruct students in the Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD)
during an intensive three-day program, September 7-9, on campus.

RAD is a program for women that teaches awareness, prevention,
risk reduction and avoidance, and hands-on defense training.  It
has been taught on more than 100 college campuses and in many
cities.  The goal is to teach women effective and proven self-
defense/martial arts tactics, and how to make an educated
decision about resistance.

Fourteen people are enrolled in the instructor training program
at Ohio State.  Six are Ohio State University Police officers.
Officers from other Ohio college campuses and jurisdictions will
also receive the instructor training.

"Our officers have taught self-defense courses to students in the
past," says University Police Captain Dave Stelzer.  "But here we
have a recognized program that is used all around the country,
especially on college campuses."

University police plan to offer RAD training to students this
autumn.
