President Drake delivers a message of gratitude

Ohio State has seen record highs in academic excellence and diversity during Drake’s tenure

Ohio State University President Michael V. Drake, the 15th president in university history, delivered a message of gratitude to the Buckeye community today (June 30), the last day of his term.

“It’s been a true thrill and privilege to lead the university into its 150th year,” he said. “There’s no other university with the scope and impact of The Ohio State University, and even with the many challenges that we face as a society today, I couldn’t be more excited or more proud about where we are as an institution and where we’re going.

“Our announcement of Dr. Kristina Johnson as the 16th president of The Ohio State University only raises those expectations even higher. I’ve talked with and known of Kristina for years now, and she’s an exceptional leader. She’s joined by her wife, Veronica Meinhard, and we’re delighted to welcome both of them to the Ohio State community.

“Brenda and I wish Kristina and Veronica all the success in the world and we also share our very best wishes and gratitude with all of you.”

During Drake’s tenure, Ohio State has seen record highs in applications, graduation rates, academic excellence, diversity and donor support. In 2019, the university broke records for overall research productivity, with $929 million in expenditures and $158 million in industry-sponsored research.

The university also has received national recognition for its commitment to teaching and learning and recorded all-time highs in patient satisfaction, patient volume and clinical outcomes at its academic medical center.
