STATEMENT BY
E. GORDON GEE, PRESIDENT
THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
President Gee on Monday afternoon (3/7) issued the following
statement regarding the murder of Stephanie Lynn Hummer, 18,
whose body was found on the near west side of Columbus yesterday
afternoon. She disappeared after leaving her residence in Evans
Scholars House, 52 E. 14th Ave., between 3:30 and 4 a.m. Sunday
morning.
"The entire university community is saddened by the tragic
death of Stephanie Hummer. As university president and as a
parent, I want to express my condolences to Stephanie's family
and to her friends in Cincinnati and at Ohio State. She came to
Ohio State last fall as an honored Evans Scholar with
expectations of earning an Ohio State degree. We grieve for the
loss of her young life and for the hopes that she, her family and
friends shared for her future.
"Stephanie's death underscores the urgency of our efforts to
educate all students about personal safety and to continue our
aggressive pursuit of crime prevention programs on and off the
Ohio State campus. I reaffirm my commitment to the joint efforts
now under way by university and community officials to improve
safety, housing and the environment of our neighborhoods."
