President Gee#s Statement on 12th Ave., Incidents

Statement from E. Gordon Gee, President
The Ohio State University

1:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 1, 1996

At The Ohio State University we have much to celebrate --
academic achievement and student success as well as athletic
victories.

But we do so in positive non-destructive ways.

Events such as occurred on 12th Ave. last Saturday night will
not be tolerated by this university.

We are a community of people who respect each other and each
other's property. As you know, 18 months ago, Ohio State
embraced the areas east and south of the campus as part of our
university community.

We will do everything in our power to protect the security and
integrity of this community.

Based on the fact that we are a part of this community and on the
fact that harm was done to our students and their property, I
have directed the provost and the vice president for student
affairs to suspend any of our students who have been identified
as being involved in this unfortunate incident last Saturday
night.

I want to send the clearest possible message that students who
engage in this kind of behavior are not welcome at Ohio State.

I know that the vast majority of our students, and the parents
who send their sons and daughters to us, agree with me and
welcome and support this action.

In a few minutes, members of the university, the community and
the city will be meeting to further explore ways to prevent a
reoccurrence of this event. We are committed to working with
anybody and everybody to solve this problem
Thank you.
