President Holbrook testifies to U.S. House subcommittee

Karen Holbrook, president of The Ohio State University, spoke to a U.S. House subcommittee about the importance of continued federal funding for the National Institutes of Health.

Holbrook, as leader of one of the nation’s top comprehensive research universities, spoke to the Labor, Health & Human Services and Education Appropriations Subcommittee at 10 a.m. on Thursday (4/14). The hearing was held in Room 2358 Rayburn House Office Building.

In her tenure at Ohio State, Holbrook has overseen a record-setting expansion of Ohio State’s research funding to more than a half-billion dollars last year.

As Ohio State grows in stature as a national research university, NIH funding has taken on additional importance to the university’s research productivity. In 2004, research awards to Ohio State from the NIH totaled approximately $129 million, a 42 percent increase since 2001. NIH awards made up 47 percent of all federal funding to Ohio State last year.

The subcommittee is chaired by U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula, R-Navarre.
