President Johnson delivers welcome message to campus community

First day of autumn semester underway

Ohio State University President Kristina M. Johnson sent the following message to students, faculty and staff today (Aug. 24).

Dear fellow Buckeyes,

As classes begin today, I’m thrilled to welcome you to Ohio State’s campuses and back to many of the traditions Buckeyes know and love.

Since I became Ohio State’s president a year ago this September, I’ve seen the leaves change on the Oval, watched snow fall on the Orton Hall tower, and marveled as our gorgeous magnolias bloomed. I look forward to seeing those sights again, only made better by all of you, the people whose spirit and energy defines life at our university.

You’re undoubtedly experiencing that wonderful whirlwind of activity now. This is the season for many of our most beloved Ohio State traditions: the Student Involvement Fair, welcome cookouts, time on the Oval and — of course — Buckeye football.

We continue to find joy and a sense of community in being back together, while fighting a virus that keeps shifting.

At yesterday’s Convocation ceremony, I shared these wise words from Ohio State alumna and poet Maggie Smith: “Put one foot in front of the other and believe that the road will be there. Be proud. You are not only traveling a new road but making it as you go.”

As you walk this road, remember that as a Buckeye, you are never alone. Part of what makes Ohio State so special is that we are a caring community of people who look out for one another. This fall, I encourage you to take care of yourself and to reach out for help when you need it. Whether you’re a student, faculty or staff member, please know that your fellow Buckeyes are here for you.

Sincerely yours,

Kristina M. Johnson, PhD
President
