Professor to Observe South African Elections

                         NEWS ADVISORY:
     OHIO STATE PROFESSOR TO OBSERVE SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS

     The United Nations has chosen Okey L. Onyejekwe, associate
professor of Black studies and journalism at The Ohio State
University, as a member of the United Nations Observer Mission to
South Africa for the elections there April 26, 27 and 28.

     Onyejekwe will leave Columbus as early as April 13.  He will
participate in several days of U.N.-sponsored training sessions
in South Africa before he and other observers go into the field
to monitor the elections.  He expects to return to Columbus on
May 4.

     Onyejekwe is a native of Nigeria who has studied and written
extensively about African politics.  He earned his bachelor's
degree with honors in journalism from the University of Nigeria
in 1972.  He subsequently received three degrees from Ohio State:
master's in journalism in 1973; master's in political science in
1974; and Ph.D. in political science in 1978.  He joined the Ohio
State faculty in 1978.  He continues to follow developments in
Africa and has written background papers on African politics for
the U.S. State Department.

     Onyejekwe is willing to be interviewed before he leaves for
South Africa.  He will talk about the significance of the
elections and the value to him, as a university professor, to
