Provost#s Teaching Fellows Named

PROVOSTS' FELLOWS TO WORK WITH TOP TEACHING FACULTY 

     COLUMBUS -- Six Ohio State University graduate students have 
been named Provost's Teaching Fellows and will develop their 
skills as teachers under the guidance of some of the university's 
most respected faculty for the next year.

     Richard Sisson, senior vice president for academic affairs 
and provost, honored the 1996-97 Fellows at a ceremony May 31.  
They are graduate students who already have demonstrated their 
classroom abilities by receiving Graduate School Teaching 
Associate Awards.  Students and faculty nominate the teaching 
associates for the honors.

     Since the TAs also show potential as future professors, 
Fellows are matched with top faculty, members of the Academy of 
Teaching who serve as mentors for a year.

     "Mentors will assist them to strengthen their teaching 
skills, to discover innovative teaching methods, and to develop 
new models of engaging students," Sisson said.

     The winners are:

     -- Cornel Balteanu of COLUMBUS (43210), teaching associate 
for the Department of Mathematics, whose mentor is Elizabeth 
Stasney, associate professor of statistics.

     -- Roger Dashner of COLUMBUS (43214), teaching associate for 
the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy, whose 
mentor is Caroline Breitenberger, associate professor of 
biochemistry.

     -- Harry Demetrulias of DUBLIN, teaching associate for the 
Department of History, whose mentor is Leila Rupp, professor of 
history.

     -- David Evans of COLUMBUS (43202), teaching associate for 
the Department of English, whose mentor is Morris Beja, professor 
of English.

     -- Jonathan Jackson of COLUMBUS (43201), teaching associate 
for the Department of Dance, whose mentor is Terry Barrett, 
professor of art education.

     -- Dongwei Su of COLUMBUS (43201), teaching associate in the 
Department of Economics, whose mentor is Bernard Erven, professor 
of agricultural economics.

     "Pairing the Provost's Teaching Fellows with the faculty 
members of the Academy of Teaching is a very potent 
combination," said Robert Arnold, vice provost.  "It's the best 
of the best matched with the best of the best."

     Academy members -- themselves exemplary teachers -- selected 
the winners.  The Fellows will receive a summer stipend equal to 
one quarter's TA salary.  The mentors' departments will receive 
$2,000 to enhance teaching programs within the department.

     The Office of Academic Affairs administers the program, 
which is in its third year.
