Researchers to Show Congress Technology

      OHIO STATE DEFENSE RESEARCH TO BE SHOWN IN CONGRESS

     On Monday (5/22), two Ohio State University researchers will 
demonstrate defense technologies to members of Congress and 
congressional and defense agency staff.  William Baeslack III and 
Matt White will join scientists from 17 other universities in 
presentations from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Caucus Room of the Cannon 
House Office Building.  Baeslack is associate dean for research 
and college development in the College of Engineering and a 
professor of industrial, welding and systems engineering.  White 
is manager of technology transfer at the U.S. Navy Joining 
Center, based at the Edison Welding Institute (EWI) on the 
Columbus campus.

     The Congressional Institute for the Future is sponsoring the 
program to highlight university contributions to the nation's 
security and military readiness through performance of Department 
of Defense sponsored research.

     The Ohio State research projects are:
     -- Ground penetrating radar, a project of the Department of 
Electrical Engineering and the Electroscience Laboratory.
     -- An adaptive control robotic welding system that senses 
changes in welds and can respond quickly to maintain production 
of a good weld.  The project is being conducted by the Department 
of Industrial, Welding and Systems Engineering and EWI.
     -- Computer programs designed to train engineers to 
interpret X-ray radiographs, which are used to non-destructively 
detect defects in welds.  The research is funded by the Navy 
Joining Center at EWI.
