Ricardo Lucio To Be New Asst. Dir. in Minority Affairs

RICARDO LUCIO TO BE NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR IN MINORITY AFFAIRS

     COLUMBUS -- Ricardo Lucio Jr. has been chosen as the new
assistant director of recruitment in the Office of Minority
Affairs at The Ohio State University.  LeRoy Pernell, vice
provost for minority affairs, announced March 15 that he will
recommend Lucio's appointment to President E. Gordon Gee and the
University's Board of Trustees.

     Subject to board approval, Lucio, 43, will begin his duties
at Ohio State on April 17.

     Lucio has been assistant director and assistant professor of
the International Center for Language and Resource Development at
the University of Findlay since 1980.  He was coordinator of
recruitment, counseling and placement at Findlay, where he also
was an instructor of Spanish and coach of the women's softball
team.

     Among his duties at Ohio State he will be responsible for
planning, coordinating, implementing and promoting programs in
the Office of Minority Affairs that focus on Hispanic student
recruitment and retention, including campus visit programs and
presentations to community organizations throughout the state.
He also will direct the day-to-day activities of the Freshman
Foundation Program, a scholarship program for minority students.
with entering grade point averages of 2.7 or better.

     "I am very pleased that Mr. Lucio has accepted our offer to
become assistant director of our recruitment unit," Pernell said.
"His skills will benefit all students served by the Office of
Minority Affairs.  He has tremendous experience in working with
Hispanic students and is well known and well regarded in the
Hispanic community in Ohio.  I and the other members of the staff
of the Office of Minority Affairs look forward to working with
him to increase the number of Hispanic students attending Ohio
State as well as assisting students of color throughout the
university."

     At the University of Findlay, Lucio wore many hats: he was
responsible for student recruitment, academic and personal
counseling, coordinating student teaching assignments,
coordinating programs with community and junior colleges,
acquiring scholarship funds, and developing relationships with
Hispanic organizations and agencies.  In addition, he regularly
taught courses in Spanish language, Hispanic literature and
culture and was the advisor to the Hispanic cultural club, LUNA.

     Before joining the Findlay faculty in 1980, he was education
services coordinator for La Raza Unida de Ohio, an organization
for migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

     A 1974 graduate of the University of Findlay, he earned an
M.A. in bilingual/bicultural education from Eastern Michigan
University in 1983.

     Lucio is a member of numerous professional organizations,
including the National Association for Bilingual Education and
the Ohio Foreign Language Association.  He has served two terms
as vice president of the Northwest Ohio Hispanic Business
Association and two terms as president of Educators in College
Helping Hispanics Onward.  He is a board member and vice
chairperson of Rural Opportunities Inc., and a past member of the
Minority Concerns Committee of the Ohio Department of Mental
Health.

     His interests include softball and other sports, traveling
and reading.  He and his wife, Maria Cruz-Lucio, an employment
services supervisor with the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services,
have two daughters.
