Robert Arnold Receives Watson Award

ROBERT ARNOLD RECEIVES WATSON AWARD FROM UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

     COLUMBUS -- Robert L. Arnold, vice provost for undergraduate
studies at The Ohio State University, has received the 1997
William H. Watson Jr. Memorial Award in recognition of his
contributions to equal educational opportunities for students.

     Arnold, of DUBLIN, joined the Ohio State faculty in 1970.
He was appointed associate provost for curriculum and instruction
in 1990, and was named a vice provost during a restructuring of
the Office of Academic Affairs in 1994.  Arnold will return to
teaching in the Department of Art Education autumn quarter.

     Established in 1977, the Watson Award is presented annually
by University College to individuals or groups who embody the
ideals and personal qualities of the late William H. Watson, an
associate dean of the college and professor of agricultural
education, who died in 1975.

     Arnold was recognized for his leadership, and particularly
for his efforts to promote structural change to increase student
success and improve student retention.  In presenting the award,
Mac A. Stewart, dean of University College, cited Arnold
