Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter to speak at Ohio State

COLUMBUS - Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the former boxing champion wrongfully imprisoned for murder in 1966, will discuss his 20-year battle for freedom at 6:30 p.m. on Monday (2/21) in the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High Street. The event is a part of the 34th annual celebration of United Black World Month (UBWM) at The Ohio State University, and is free and open to the public.

Carter is the former director for the Association in Defence of the Wrongfully Convicted, based in Toronto, Canada. His experience was documented in the 1999 feature film "The Hurricane," which starred Denzel Washington.

"Obtaining Freedom through Unity" is the theme for UBWM, which features programs highlighting African American history and culture. Other UBWM events include celebrity guests such as "Apprentice" alumna Omarosa Manigault Stallworth, comedian Wanda Sykes and author Farrah Gray.
